Why Human Activities Are A Major Concern On Land Pollution

Why Human Activities Are A Major Concern On Land Pollution
For a considerable amount of time, pollution has been disregarded in the agendas of international development, global health, and numerous national policies.
Though overlooked, it’s a global health threat for millions of deaths through associated diseases; and great economic losses.
Man’s activities have significantly transformed the nature of land surface through various activities- agriculture and industrialization that result in the problem of land pollution.
Some effects of land pollution are long-lasting and irreversible such as chemical leaching and therefore the best way to control is to stop the pollution from happening.
The associated health risks of land pollution through land contamination such as dumping of wastes, garbage and land pollutants onto the land environment have shaped the debate on land pollution to bring more attention at the global level.
There has been an increasing land dereliction caused by uncontrolled human activities such as agriculture, and industrialization impacting the quality of the land environment; which has devastating effects on human beings, animals, plants, water quality and construction materials.
Mitigation measures on land pollution
To reverse and contain the situation, measures need to be put in place to control human activities such as;
1. Chemical and sewage sludge: chemical leaching is irreversible and therefore the best control is to stop it from happening.
Properly treating industrial waste, properly managing treatment facilities and using of right amount of chemical facilities should be promoted
2. Waste disposal sites: enhance recycling of waste, burning toxic materials in incinerators and adding chemicals to landfills to prevent the occurrence of a disaster.
3. Soil erosion: promote afforestation and reforestation to reduce soil vulnerability to agents of erosion.
4. Metal scraps: recycling metal scraps in the jua kali industry and/or also burring them deep underground.
More importantly, awareness creation efforts should be enhanced and it calls for collective and coordinated action at both international and national levels.
Governments, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders should take action down to grass root levels to prevent uncontrollable levels of land pollution that can cause catastrophes.
