If He Looses He Should Just Retire - Kalonzo Throws Jab at Raila

With the elections for the African Union Commission (AUC) approaching, various political figures have expressed differing views on the prospects of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is seeking to succeed Moussa Faki Mahamat as the commission’s chairperson.

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who has endorsed Raila’s candidacy for the presidency multiple times, is the latest to weigh in on the debate.

Kalonzo expressed to seasoned journalist Mark Masai that he could not envision Raila returning to the political arena if he does not secure the AUC position in the February elections.

The leader of the opposition asserted that Raila ought to retire if he loses the highly awaited elections.

Kalonzo expressed to Mark Masai that he would be surprised to see Raila return to political struggles if he fails in his bid for the AUC chairmanship.

“I can’t understand how Raila Odinga could lose the chairmanship and then return to claim he wants to lead Azimio. “I would be amazed, I would truly be amazed,” Kalonzo stated in an interview late on Monday, February 3, 2025.

“That doesn’t seem like the Raila Odinga I know, as he must also have a reality check. For now, the option is that he goes if he wins, which would be great for him, the country, and the continent. He confirmed, “If he loses, I believe he should just retire.”

Kalonzo, who withdrew his presidential candidacy in 2022 and consented to support Raila and Martha Karua, noted that he would anticipate Raila’s association with former President Uhuru Kenyatta as a retired statesman.

“I would suggest that Raila retire and join Uhuru Kenyatta, who is no longer in leadership and has no plans to run again. Kalonzo upheld the view that Raila would take on that role alongside Uhuru as a retired statesman.

He clarified, however, that Azimio was completely supportive of Raila Odinga’s candidacy, stressing that his principles and struggles would contribute to the continent’s political and socio-economic progress.
