Police to Guard New Ksh 2 Billion Haile Selassie Highway Underpass

New Ksh 2 Billion Highway Underpass to Be Guarded by Police 24/7
Roads Principal Secretary Joseph Mbugua informed members of parliament that the ongoing construction of the Sh2 billion passenger underpass at Haile Selassie Avenue in Nairobi will include shops and stalls to improve passenger safety.
To enable the building of a pedestrian underpass at the Haile Selassie roundabout, KeNHA shut down the road on January 16. This closure is anticipated to last until February 20, 2025.
Principal Secretary Joseph Mbugua provided new information to members of parliament regarding the underpass construction, which will include 24-hour shops staffed by police to improve security and discourage criminal activity.
Mbugua mentioned that police officers will keep a 24/7 watch on the underpass to secure the safety of pedestrians and to link the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) with the Green Park Terminus.
The goal of this initiative is to alleviate traffic on Uhuru Highway by enabling smooth movement of pedestrians. The underpass, which is being built by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), will allow hundreds of Nairobi commuters heading to Upper Hill and surrounding areas to cross safely while maintaining uninterrupted traffic flow.
“We need to recognize that we have improved social aspects in this area, such as the inclusion of shops below that will allow people to conduct business there, even at night,” said Mbugua Mbugua.
“It is connected as well, and we aspire that such enterprises will draw policing to the vicinity, thus increasing safety for pedestrians.”
At a cost of Sh2 billion, the Greenpark Terminus Pedestrian Underpass Network is being constructed along the Uhuru Highway-Haile Selassie intersection roundabout in Nairobi.
After the government allocated resources from the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (RMLF) for the construction, the project was approved.
Upon its completion, the underpass will link pedestrians traveling between Nairobi CBD and Green Park Terminus, and it will also accommodate hundreds of residents of Nairobi who commute to Upper Hill and nearby areas.
