50,000 Youths to be Employed by Govt Under Climate WorkX Initiative
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced plans to extend the Climate WorX initiative to additional counties after its successful implementation in Nairobi.
The Climate WorX initiative is a key environmental and employment program designed to rehabilitate essential ecosystems, especially urban river corridors, while generating job opportunities for Kenyan youth.
PS Omollo noted that as the program expands beyond the capital, it will provide jobs for 50,000 young people.
“Currently, 20,000 youths have been recruited, mainly from informal settlements in Nairobi,” he said. “We aim to extend this initiative to other towns nationwide, using insights gained since its launch three months ago.
While accompanying his superior, Kipchumba Murkomen, on a visit to the Climate WorX project by the Ngong River in Mukuru Kwa Reuben, the PS commented.
According to the Ministry of Interior and National Administration (MINA), almost 50% of the aimed-for 47 kilometers of the Nairobi River has been restored through the program.Climate WorX was initiated as a response to the serious flooding in riparian zones that resulted in the displacement of residents in Mukuru Kwa Reuben, Mathare, Kibra, and Dandora.
MINA also revealed that 30,000 individuals impacted by the flooding have been registered for social housing.
This initiative is a collaborative effort that includes the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), the National Youth Service (NYS), and local communities.
President Ruto Launched the Program in 2024.
