Waititu Requests to Be Hospitalized After His 12 Year Sentencing

Ferdinand Waititu, the former governor of Kiambu, has asked his lawyers to request a hospital visit during his sentencing on Thursday, February 13.
Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki sentenced Waititu to either 12 years in prison or a fine of Ksh53.5 million. His wife, Susan Wangare, was also sentenced by the same magistrate to pay a fine of Ksh500,000 or serve one year in prison.
Shortly after the sentencing, Waititu’s attorney disclosed that the ex-governor was not feeling well and asked the court for permission to pursue medical treatment.
.The lawyer did not reveal the specifics of Waititu’s illness, but he emphasized that Waititu required immediate medical care.
Nonetheless, the prosecution opposed the request, insisting that Waititu should be detained and receive medical treatment while in police custody.
This was followed by a short exchange of arguments between the legal representatives, during which Waititu’s lawyer Danstan Omari referenced a previous case involving former Nairobi Town Clerk John Gakuo, who died at Mbagathi Hospital in Nairobi while serving a three-year prison sentence.
The judge, unimpressed with Omari’s previous example, remained steadfast in his verdict, insisting that Waititu could receive medical treatment even while incarcerated.
Omari ultimately gave in, asking the court to permit police officers to escort the former governor to medical treatment instead.
Omari disclosed that his team would take advantage of the 14-day period allowed by law to appeal the sentence.
Alongside the sentencing, Waititu was prohibited from holding any public office for a decade.
