Former Nyandarua Governor Convicted

Daniel Waithaka Mwangi, the former governor of Nyandarua County, was found guilty of procurement violations.

On Thursday, the Nyahururu Anti-Corruption Court found Waithaka guilty of willfully breaking the procurement legislation.

He was found guilty together with Grace Wanjiru Gitonga, a former member of the County Executive Committee for Water, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources.

They were also found guilty by the court of willfully breaking procurement laws and starting a project without any previous planning.

The two illegally hired a consulting engineering firm without a procurement plan for the 2013–2014 fiscal year, according to court records.

In addition, the court determined that the governor had wrongfully granted a benefit to the consulting firm in April 2014 by using his office, leading to his conviction for office misuse.

This came after he chose to give the company a contract for the design evaluation of the Ol Kalou Town Sewerage System and the creation of the County Water Master Plan without following the proper procurement procedures.

On Monday, March 20, after the charges, the case will be discussed for mitigation and punishment, and the former county chief will find out his fate.

Ferdinand Waititu, the former governor of Kiambu, was found guilty of awarding tenders improperly and was sentenced to 12 years in prison or a Ksh53.5 million fine last month.
