Landlord Closes Police Post Over Ksh2M Rent Arrears In Kirinyaga

Residents of Mwea-West in Kirinyaga County are facing uncertainty after a police patrol camp in the region was forced to close due to rent arrears.

Officers stationed at the Riandira Police Post were relocated following the closure of their base, which was recovered by the landlord due to an alleged KSh2 million rent deficit.

Six officers have apparently been living at the station since 2018 when they were handed the structure by the landlord, who died in 2018.

Following the landlord’s death, sources indicate that the officers were informed that they would need to begin paying rent in order to continue operating in the facility.

However, according to the deceased landlord’s daughter, the arrears amount to KSh2 million.

Locals are shocked by the eviction, especially after witnessing cops’ possessions being put onto a van this week—a vivid reminder of their future security situation.

Residents in the area are particularly concerned since the relocation of policemen to other stations could pose a security risk to Mwea-West, where the nearest police station is four kilometers distant.

Limited police infrastructure is not uncommon in Kenya, with isolated areas bearing the brunt of the problem, forcing officers to rely on rented facilities to conduct operations.

One of the primary reasons police patrol bases and stations function in rented spaces is a lack of government-owned infrastructure in certain areas, particularly those that are behind in development.

Similarly, the requirement to create police posts in high-risk locations in order to respond promptly to security threats can lead authorities to conduct operations on private property through formal or informal arrangements.
