BILLBOARDS, SECRET MEETINGS: How Ruto’s Mt Kenya Allies Are Preparing The Ground

President William Ruto’s allies have begun grassroots mobilization ahead of his highly anticipated visit to Mount Kenya next week.

The President will return to the region after a six-month hiatus following the impeachment of his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.

While Ruto’s formal agenda is unknown, sources say he will spend a week touring the region.

His friends are keeping the facts under wraps until they make logistical arrangements.

In preparation for his visit, big billboards welcoming the President have been erected in important towns throughout Mount Kenya, including Kiambu, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Thika Road, and Embu.

Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi traveled around the area, including Nyeri Town, on Monday, pushing citizens to turn out in big numbers to greet the President.

“We are ready to welcome the President to our region, and I can confirm that people are excited and eagerly awaiting his visit,” Wamumbi said in Nyeri Town.

A big billboard depicting photographs of the President, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and Wamumbi has been installed in the town, with the inscription “Karibu Mlima” (Welcome to the Mountain).

Meanwhile, Nyandarua Woman Representative Faith Gitau has been organizing a number of events in her county to encourage citizens to greet the President.

The tour, which is set to begin in the first week of April, follows a series of high-level discussions with regional leaders.

On March 20, Ruto met with all elected leaders from Mount Kenya at the State House to prepare for the visit.

On Monday, March 24, Ruto met with at least five Cabinet Secretaries and 13 Principal Secretaries from the region to finish preparations.

The State House conference was attended by eight governors, with the exception of Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Gachagua’s close supporter.

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika was also missing, however, she issued an apology.

Ruto’s most recent development-focused excursion of Mount Kenya was in August when he spent three days launching and completing projects in the region.

These visits are viewed as part of efforts to match the President’s program with political realities on the ground, despite reports of rising discontent in the region.
