Ndia Member of Parliament George Kariuki has issued a warning to political enemies over a critical Mount Kenya bloc.

This comes as tensions increase ahead of President William Ruto’s planned Central Kenya travel.

Speaking on Sunday, March 30, Kariuki took a shot at an unknown political figure, accusing him of attempting to utilize Kirinyaga county as a political colony.

According to the legislator, some prominent political personalities have established a habit of exploiting political swing counties to advance their own agendas at the expense of citizens.

“In Kirinyaga, we are no colony of any county. We have our own identity and direction,” Kariuki asserted.

The MP also criticized lawmakers from outside the county for attempting to dictate political alliances within Kirinyaga.

“One just decides where he wants to tour anywhere, and he’s from another county, then he tells us to leave this faction and join that one. We are not engaging in that,” Kariuki stated.

While it is unclear who the MP was referring to, it is worth remembering that Kariuki is not a fan of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, particularly following his spectacular impeachment.

Kariuki was harshly critical of Gachagua before his impeachment motion.

He accuses the former DP of abandoning Kenya’s Kwanza government to advance his agenda.

Meanwhile, Gachagua’s political strategy has been to try to consolidate the Mount Kenya support, with Kirinyaga county being one of his primary targets for swinging numbers his way.

In February 2025, he hosted Kirinyaga County leaders in an effort to strengthen his support base.

They included MCAs David Mathenge (Baragwi Ward), Kinyua Wangui (Mutira Ward), Moses Maina (Kanyekini Ward), Eric Muchina (Kerugoya), Beatrice Mitaro (Wamumu) and Daisy Githinji (Kabage Ward).

Regardless, Kirinyaga remains a dangerous political territory, with local leaders divided on who to support: the Kenya Kwanza government or Rigathi Gachagua and his followers.

This dynamic was manifested on Tuesday, March 4, during a burial event, when a pastor refused to allow Gachagua-allied leaders to speak.

Tensions immediately escalated when Kirinyanga Women Representative Njeri Maina and other leaders, including county Senator Kamau Murango, stormed the podium, demanding the right to speak to the audience.
