‘Just Resign!’ – Civil Society Tells IG Kanja After Attending Ruto’s Rally
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has asked Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to either issue a public apology or retire after being seen attending a political rally held by President William Ruto on Wednesday, April 2.
According to LSK President Faith Odhiambo, Kanja made a huge mistake by joining the event, claiming that he acted unconstitutionally by failing to stay impartial.
“We invite Mr. Kanja to step aside from the position of Inspector-General and allow the role to be occupied by an individual willing to serve all Kenyans without imposing their political biases on the people of Kenya,” Odhiambo demanded.
LSK denounced IG Kanja’s attendance and comments at the politically charged gathering, claiming that they jeopardized the police service’s impartiality and could alienate segments of Kenya’s populace with opposing political views.
“From the onset, we must point out that the Inspector-General has a constitutional obligation to serve all Kenyans impartially, regardless of political affiliation. According to Odhiambo, Kanja’s post, established under Article 245(1) of the Constitution, prohibits him from engaging in biased conduct, such as attending a political rally.
“The Inspector General is constitutionally required to act impartially and is exempt from acting at the whims of any person or advancing any purpose that does not reflect the Constitutional principles of National Security,” the lawyer stated.
“Kanja’s decision to attend and address a political rally was a lapse in judgment, a violation for which he must bear the full consequences of the law.”
LSK has described Kanja’s move in Nyeri as a political gimmick and has demanded that he either issue a public apology or resign, leaving the position to a neutral individual.
The organization further urged that Kanja avoid participation in any political mobilization, rallies, or debate, both now and in the future, in his capacity as IG of police.

On Wednesday, the Police Inspector-General joined President Ruto on his Mt. Kenya tour and addressed the crowd.
During the rally, the Inspector General informed Kenyans that the police service remains committed to enforcing law and order without fear or favor, underlining that all Kenyans, regardless of political affiliation, will be treated equally.
“Our focus is on ensuring the safety and security of every citizen in this country,” the IG said during the tour.
The president is on a developmental trip to the Mt Kenya region, which is set to culminate on Friday after five days of interaction with the mountain’s residents.
