
DETAILS: Ruto’s Phone Call With UN Secretary-General Over The Haiti Mission
On Thursday, President William Ruto spoke by phone with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, which Kenya leads.
Guterres praised Kenya for playing the lead role in the campaign to restore peace to the conflict-torn country.
Both presidents also reviewed the United Nations’ sustained support for the Mission in light of concerns about inadequate finance.
Ruto has advocated for the deployment to be reclassified as a UN peacekeeping mission to ensure funding.
Currently, the mission is supported by private contributions, but a UN-based mission would require all 193 member states to pay the effort.

“I held a telephone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during which we discussed the UN’s continued support for the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti,” Ruto said.
“He acknowledged Kenya’s leadership role and commended our steadfast commitment to our shared goal of restoring stability in Haiti.”

Ruto also updated Guterres on current peace attempts in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
He also reported on the results of the joint East African Community-Southern African Development Community conference, which presented a road map for long-term initiatives.
“I called on the UN to support the joint EAC-SADC regional efforts in implementing the roadmap for peace in eastern DRC,” the president added.
“Additionally, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to regional peace, security, and sustainable conflict resolution, emphasising the importance of continued collaboration between the United Nations and regional initiatives.”
