President William Ruto has urged youths to take advantage of different initiatives launched by his administration to combat unemployment.

According to the National Council for Population and Development, over 67% of Kenyan youth, who account for 35% of the population, are unemployed.

However, the President, who spoke in Maragua, Murang’a county, on Thursday, stated that the government is launching three projects to provide job opportunities for youth.

He referenced the Affordable Housing Project, which he stated presently has 150,000 housing units nationwide and employs over 200,000 young people.

“If you are a plumber, mason, carpenter or electrician, look for employment in this project because it has many opportunities.”

He also mentioned the ICT hubs, which are being constructed in each ward and are expected to employ between 200 and 300 workers.

“Once your MP completes the hub, the Ministry of ICT will come in and provide instructors and the necessary equipment,” he said.

Ruto stated that his government has also been looking for jobs in other nations that may be accessed digitally via the hubs.

He stated that many adolescents are being deployed to work in other countries as part of the labour mobility strategy.

The President stated that employment prospects are accessible in the United States, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), France, and the United Kingdom (UK), among others.

“We are working with MPs to source for jobs in the international market so that we can save youths from drugs and joblessness,” he said, underscoring the need for Kenyans to shun divisive politics.

For years, the Mt Kenya region has struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, which is often linked to unemployment.

The President also encouraged the Controller of Budget (CoB) to allow county governments to provide bursaries for youngsters from low-income families.

He stated that all pupils need bursaries, whether from the national or county governments.

“There is no child that belongs to the county or national government. I’m asking the Council of Governors to work with us so we can show CoB how important bursaries are,” he said.

Ruto was reacting to Governor Irungu Kang’ata, who stated that his Nyota Zetu bursary initiatives, which help thousands of youngsters, are failing since the CoB issued a letter preventing his government from distributing bursaries.
