SYLVIA KEMUNTO: DETAILED Recount Of Slain MMU Student By Her Boyfriend

The body of missing Multimedia University (MMU) student Sylvia Kemunto was discovered on Wednesday night in a water tank on the roof of a hostel within the institution’s compound.

On Sunday, March 30, 2025, Kemunto, a Mass Communications and Computer Science major, went missing under strange circumstances.

Her mother, Triza Kwamboka, who lives in Kawangware, had sent her support funds via a church elder’s phone.

When she attempted to confirm that her daughter had gotten the monies, her calls were unanswered.

Kemunto’s mother became anxious and traveled to the university, only to learn that her daughter was vanished.

The school’s administration confirmed her absence, causing the mother to submit a report at Langata Police Station, where an Occurrence Book (OB) entry was recorded.

“She had told me about a young man who was making advances at her. She said she did not like him and I told her to stand firm,” said Kwamboka.

Kemunto’s roommate had gone to church the day she disappeared, leaving her alone in their Block B apartment, number 90.

According to investigations, Kemunto’s boyfriend, Philip Eric Mutinda, a first-year Electrical Engineering student, paid a visit to her dorm at 1pm on that day.

According to eyewitnesses, Mutinda was observed wrestling with a bag purportedly belonging to Kemunto as he transported it from her third-floor room to his own in Block E, room 301.

Later that night, Mutinda’s roommate apparently discovered the suitcase in their room, but it was gone the next morning.

“I came in the evening and found the guy with the suitcase. He was trying to lie on it like it was a pillow, but it seemed uncomfortable, so he placed it beside the desk,” the witness said.

“The next morning, I woke up around 8 and noticed that both the guy and the suitcase were gone.”

Police began investigating immediately, tracing Kemunto’s phone records.

The signal located her within the campus grounds, but her phone was turned off around 10 p.m. on the day she disappeared.

This prompted school officials to launch a search on campus.

“It is clear that on that day Sunday when the girl was reported missing, the boy entered her room. The police are trying to locate the boy,” said MMU Ag. Vice Chancellor Prof. Geoffrey Kihara.

On Wednesday, the search crew became aware of a terrible odor emerging from Block E.

By midday, the source of the odor had been identified: a water tank on the roof of one of the hostels.

Kemunto’s rotting body was discovered three days after she vanished.

The extraction took about two hours, as investigators discovered that the tank had been sealed with wire and weighed down with a hefty stone, presumably to hide the odor.

Sylvia’s body has since been transported to the City Mortuary, for a postmortem examination.

“We want the truth, especially from the school. How could he kill her and move her body undetected?” Kemunto’s uncle, Clinton Nyamare, posed.

“As an institution where are we heading? What is the guarantee and safety of our girls around men? Those are the questions we are asking,” said MMU Secretary General Okari Okengo.
