Morning Accident Involving Tahmeed Bus Leaves Several Injured In Mombasa

At least ten passengers were evacuated to the Coast General Hospital after a 52-seater Tahmeed bus collided with a PSV matatu on Friday, April 4, at night.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred at 1 a.m. when the bus, driving from Mwembe Tayari, developed mechanical problems on the way uphill and collided with a Mikindani matatu at Kibarani Flyover.

According to reports, the bus’s brakes failed, leading it to reverse and collide with the matatu belonging to the Miritini Sacco.

“Seated at the back of the matatu, I was watching the traffic when I suddenly saw a passenger jump off the bus. Instinctively, I followed and jumped off as well,” narrated one of the survivors.

“It was only then that I realized the bus had crashed into the front part of our matatu. At the same time, a bodaboda rider and his pillion passenger narrowly escaped as they jumped before impact.”

According to witnesses, the matatu driver is among those injured. The majority of the casualties suffered head injuries and broken legs.

There have been no recorded deaths from the accident at the time of publication of this piece.

Speaking at the accident scene, the area MCA urged the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to be more alert and guarantee that all vehicles on the road are serviced to prevent future accidents.

“I’d like to call on NTSA to ensure all vehicles undergo servicing before they use the road,” Manuari Seff Juma, the Chaani MCA, requested.

“This is an accident that could have been avoided if NTSA had been responsible enough to do their job.”

The MCA also recommended drivers to take extra precautions when driving, particularly during the long rainy season.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has been directed to ensure that the road is adequately maintained to avoid repeat accidents.

The disaster occurred hours after numerous pupils were injured in a separate accident in Witeithie, Kiambu County.

The students from Mugoiri Girls High School were traveling home for the April holidays when the matatu they were in lost control, veered off the road and landed in a ditch.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, April 3, NTSA urged all stakeholders in the road transport sector to implement measures that enhance road safety.
