‘Troubled’ Police Officer Shoots Self, Survives The Attempted Suicide In Baringo
A police officer is in bad condition after attempting suicide at the Marigat Deputy County Commissioner’s (DCC) office in Baringo County.
Authorities verified that the officer, a constable on night duty at the office, shot himself in the chin with a G3 rifle early Thursday morning, April 3.
The motive for the occurrence is unknown. Colleagues of the cop characterized him as obviously upset in the hours preceding the shooting.
Around the time of the incident, the officer’s colleagues heard a gunshot from the DCC headquarters.
Following an inquiry, they discovered the officer around 70 meters from the station, walking in uniform with a gunshot wound to his chin.
According to police accounts, the gunshot pierced his lower chin, passed through his mouth, and injured his lower jaw, indicating a suicide attempt.
He had been assigned night guard duty at the Marigat DCC office and was given a G3 gun, which he abandoned shortly after the incident.
A further search yielded the rifle, which was found around 100 meters behind the NG-CDF offices, along with its empty magazine.
In addition, one spent cartridge was located about a meter from the weapon, and 12 more rounds of the same caliber were discovered outside the National Disaster Management Authority office in the DCC office building.

According to fellow cops, the constable had been restless all night and claimed to have heard persons moving within the compound soon before the shooting.
The cop was rushed to Baringo County Referral Hospital for surgery and is said to be in stable condition.
This tragedy is part of a troubling surge in suicides among police officers. Authorities relate this tendency to the high levels of stress that cops encounter on the job.
In response to the escalating situation, the National Police Service has implemented counselling programs.
The National Police Service Commission has developed a dedicated unit to provide assistance to officers struggling with mental health issues.
