‘Let Him Be Careful Around Ruto!’ – Gachagua Tells CDF Kahariri, IG Kanja

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has cautioned Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Charles Kahariri and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to exercise caution around President William Ruto.

During an interview with KTN News, Gachagua stated that the Head of State sought to utilize Kahariri and Kanja for political benefit.

He claims that Ruto is influencing people into supporting the administration, resulting in public outrage.

While criticizing the government, the former DP advised the two high-ranking security personnel to exercise caution and avoid being set up by the President.

According to Gachagua, Ruto previously did the same with former Police Inspector General Japhet Koome.

Gachagua accused Ruto of allegedly inciting the former police chief against members of the public during the youth-led anti-government protests in June and July last year, before forcing him to retire.

“I do not want to advise General Kahariri, but having worked with President William Ruto, I want to tell him to be careful,” Gachagua alleged.

“I saw the way President Ruto set up former IG Japhet Koome. He told him what to say, but when there was too much pressure, he called him and told him to resign.”

“Probably the General has been told to go and say this so that there can be a public backlash, and probably prepare a way for his exit. I am not sure, but let him be careful,” he added.

The former DP questioned President Ruto’s choice to visit the Mt Kenya region with senior police officers, including IG Kanja.

According to Gachagua, he had never seen the Head of State guarded by high-ranking police officials, and Kanja flew to the populous region to assist the president with his campaigns.

Gachagua’s comments come only five days after IG Kanja was chastised by some Kenyans for allegedly addressing members of the public during President Ruto’s development trip to the Mt Kenya area.

Many saw Kanja’s statements as a political rallying cry, prompting anger from Kenyans who accused the police chief of allegedly compromising the National Police Service (NPS).

Despite the criticism, the administration denied the charges, stating that the IG was responsible for guaranteeing public safety and security at presidential events.

“As the head of the National Police Service (NPS), the Inspector General (IG) is mandated to provide security and coordination during presidential functions as provided under section 24 of the National Police Service Act, 2011, which mandates the police to ensure public safety and security, including at events attended by the Head of State,” said Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura.
