DP Kindiki Issues Fresh Orders To Police After Uproar
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has directed police and other agencies to examine why fires continue to break out in Nairobi County marketplaces such as Gikomba and Toi Market.
Kindiki’s office issued a statement on Wednesday, April 9, urging these authorities to find long-term solutions to prevent the inferno from occurring again.
“The government has instructed relevant agencies to investigate the cause of the frequent inferno in the markets within Nairobi City County, including Gikomba and Toi Market, and provide comprehensive long-term solutions to avoid recurrence,” the statement reads.
According to Kindiki, one of the solutions to frequent inferno outbreaks is to construct modern marketplaces that are completely equipped with essential facilities, such as inferno control equipment.
Kindiki claimed that 400 similar marketplaces are being developed around the country, 10 of which are in Nairobi County.

“Part of the solution to this problem is the construction of the modern markets, fully equipped with all amenities, including the inferno control equipment,” he added.
“400 such markets are being constructed across the country, including the 10 within the Nairobi City County.”
This follows a recent conflagration that occurred on Tuesday, April 1, resulting in significant losses for hundreds of dealers at the Gikomba Market.
The inferno began at 3 a.m. in the ‘Kwa Mbao’ region near the inferno station and lasted many hours.
According to reports, the inferno spread over the region, including a section of the bus station.
Kindiki visited with over 400 traders affected by the flames to give support and assistance in resuming their companies.

The most recent inferno in the Toi Market occurred in August, killing four people and destroying livelihoods.
In the early hours of Saturday, August 3, flames consumed the bustling market, reducing it to smoldering ruins and leaving the local community in shock and mourning.
The inferno erupted around 5 am, rapidly spreading through the densely packed stalls.
Traders and residents scrambled to save whatever they could, but their efforts were in vain as the inferno raged uncontrollably.
