KUCCPS: Why Students Are Placed in Courses They Didn’t Choose
Agnes Wahome, CEO of the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, revealed on Tuesday why many students are placed in courses for which they did not apply, following initial concerns voiced by impacted students.
Wahome indicated that students applying for medical courses were the most harmed by incorrect placement in programs they did not apply for.
The CEO noted that KUCCPS receives over 10,000 applications for medical degrees but places less than 1,000 students in each university.

KUCCPS CEO, Dr.Agnes Wahome : I would like to tell Kenyans and students at large that there are more courses other than medicine that are equally good. A programme like medicine, we place less than 1,000 across all universities, yet more than 10,000 students… pic.twitter.com/TTxt4Re7yu
“We place less than 1,000 students across all the universities that offer medicine courses. However, the number of students who apply is more than 10,000,” Wahome stated.
“We noticed that students select courses in a way that if you ask them the careers they want to take, they respond that they want to take medicine courses.”
The KUCCPS president urged thousands of applicants vying for slots at the nation’s more than 70 public and private institutions to avoid relying too much on individual courses.

According to the CEO, the business has had challenges because the majority of students apply to specific universities that they consider to be prominent.
She went on to say that their research showed that students choose older and more established universities while ignoring newly chartered ones.

Dr.Agnes Wahome, CEO KUCCPS : We ensure students end up doing programmes which they made choices themselves. Students find themselves in programmes that they may not have selected because probably they either chose courses more demanding in terms of grades.… pic.twitter.com/WyQhYQdidK
“I would like Kenyans to know that there are more programmes other than medicine,” she explained.
There is no bad program, and all of them are good and marketable, depending on what you do with the certificate after school.”
Wahome also urged Kenyans to take extra time when selecting their programs to prevent problems with application processing.
KUCCPS features various color parts for public and private institutions to help applicants save time while using the portal.
