Mombasa Governor Issues Update Into Death In Demolished Building

Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir has released an update on a person who died prior to the destruction of an 11-story structure in Mombasa on Wednesday, April 9.

In a speech on Thursday, April 10, the governor stated that the incident happened prior to the destruction and was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) film.

“Sadly, we have CCTV footage showing that a man, Yussuf Ali Abdi, was inside the building,” Nassir said.

“Minutes after he entered, the building collapsed. His intention was to inspect the house with the aim of buying it.”

Nassir added that, according to the video, the man, Yussuf Ali Abdi, entered the building moments before it fell.

He is alleged to have inspected the property with the idea of purchasing it.

“The officer who opened the door will be questioned, and the Lands Department will also be asked to clear the area where Yussuf was last seen,” Nassir added.

He expressed worries and complimented the police for managing the locals who were filming and photographing the demolition operation from a close distance, endangering their lives.

He claimed that the effort to demolish the unsafe structure was accomplished, with the assistance of various agencies.

“The demolition of the dangerous building was successfully completed yesterday. We thank the residents for their cooperation,” he said.

Nassir further stated that his administration has made plans to ensure that similar operations can now be conducted throughout the clock.
