Gachagua Hits Out At NIS Over Butere Girls’ ‘Echoes of War’ Drama

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has linked the alleged torture of Butere Girls High School girls in Nakuru to a breakdown in the country’s intelligence apparatus.

Gachagua accused Noordin Haji, Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), of failing to prevent the learners from being intimidated.

The former DP spoke at former President Mwai Kibaki’s burial service in Othaya, Nyeri County, on Friday afternoon.

According to the former Deputy President, if it had been determined that the performance titled Echoes of War by Butere Girls pupils was unsuitable, it could have been halted in its early phases.

Gachagua further stated that the collapse of the country’s intelligence was caused by the NIS boss’s continual deals, accusing him of prioritizing personal gain before serving Kenyans.

“They only noticed about the play in the finals in Nakuru because of a failed intelligence system,” Gachagua said.

“If a decision needed to be made that the play was bad and people should not see it, it could have been stopped at the initial stages.”

“This is because there are many agents on the ground every day, but because everyone is sleeping on their duty, and they are busy looking for money through deals including the NIS officers and the president,” he added.

In response to deteriorating diplomatic relations between Kenya and Sudan, Gachagua chastised President William Ruto’s administration for allowing Sudanese rebel groups to transport illicit guns through Nairobi.

The former Deputy President further stated that gold unlawfully stolen from Sudan was being processed in Kenya, blaming such operations for the current violence in the foreign country.

“When you look at the situation in Sudan, we are allowing gold to be processed in Kenya and guns to be smuggled through Nairobi to go and kill children in Sudan,” the former DP claimed.

Several government officials and opposition leaders attended the ceremony, including Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Gachagua further accused Ruto of squandering government funds for items that did not benefit Kenyans.

The former DP chastised the Head of State for allegedly forcing Kenyans to pay greater taxes while failing to use the gathered monies properly.

According to Gachagua, unlike Kibaki, who collected and used taxes wisely, President Ruto’s administration irritated Kenyans with excessive taxation that yielded no significant return.

“There is nothing wrong with taxation, and Kenyans cannot be accused of failing to pay taxes,” Gachagua said.

“Mwai Kibaki did it, and people paid taxes and did not complain because they saw corresponding services.”
