DETAILS: Butere Girls’ Principal Questions Teacher About “Echoes Of War” Script
Butere Girls High School’s principal has issued a show cause letter to a teacher for suspected changes to the play Echoes of War.
In a letter, the Principal alleged that the teacher altered the script. The Principal has asked the teacher to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken.
According to a letter dated March 25, disciplinary action is being contemplated against the teacher who reportedly altered the script to incorporate anti-government elements during the Regional Drama Festivals.
According to the school’s top administrator, the teacher departed from the approved script that was originally given at the County Level Festival held at Bulimbo Girls High School on March 18, 2025.
According to the letter, the amended version, which was performed at the Regional Drama Festival on March 22 at Chavakali High School, had unauthorised scenes.
The principal notably mentioned sequences in which student players held banners and posters with inscriptions like “Occupy Space,” “SHA,” and “Cash Cow,” which she believed conveyed anti-government views.
“You are therefore asked to show cause why disciplinary action should not be taken against you for altering the original script to make the play reflect anti-government themes,” the letter reads in part.

The teacher has been given seven days to respond in writing or face undefined additional disciplinary punishment.
The letter was also copied to relevant officials, including the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Secretary, TSC County and Sub-County Directors, and the school’s Board of Management (BOM) Chairperson.
The episode has raised discussions about censorship, creative expression, and the role of political criticism in school performances.

The debate around the play, which explores topics of governance, technology, and youth activism, grew after it was first barred from the festival.
The ban was later lifted by the High Court, enabling the performance to continue.
However, tensions rose when the play’s playwright, former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, was allegedly seized by police.
This prompted a boycott by the students, who demanded his presence before performing.
He was eventually freed.
