Latvia, a European country, has announced plans to open a consulate in Nairobi as part of its efforts to improve diplomatic and foreign relations with Kenya.

Andris Razans, Latvia’s ambassador to Kenya, who is stationed in Egypt and oversees the African continent, named Kenya as one of Africa’s most technologically advanced economies.

He also cited Kenya’s huge prospects in technology, agribusiness, and start-up support as important factors for the decision to open a consulate in Nairobi.

Ambassador Razans stated that the Latvian government is coordinating with Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to obtain approval for a consular post.

He was speaking at a high-powered business roundtable that included Kenyan and Latvian industry leaders.

Kenyans who want to travel to Latvia must now go through the Hungarian Embassy in Nairobi, which handles Latvia’s visa and consular services.

This move is considered a critical step toward Kenya’s national vision of global trade integration and economic reform.

Furthermore, the decision was prompted by rising bilateral interest, which has resulted in the need for a stronger and more dependable diplomatic framework.

However, the diplomat expressed worries about the process, which is dependent on Kenyan government permission.

If successful, the procedure is likely to be finished by the end of the year, marking another diplomatic milestone for the two countries.

“We are in the process of establishing a presence in Kenya. If all goes well, and the Kenyan government supports all these, then by the end of the year, we shall have achieved that,” Razans stated.

“This means that businesses will be following as well. We might be able to open an honourary consulate and enable us to issue visas, among other honourary advantages.”
