Police have verified that a former NTV journalist was murdered in a car accident on Valley Arcade in Nairobi.

Silas Apollo, who worked at Nairobi Law Monthly at the time of his death, was hit and murdered by a speeding car on Thursday night, April 10.

The driver of the vehicle that struck him did not stop. Apollo is thought to have been crossing the road on foot when the tragedy occurred.

Police said the journalist was not immediately identified, but the body was taken to the mortuary for an autopsy.

The case was initially reported as an “unknown person hit by an unknown vehicle”.

Valley Road is considered one of the city’s most dangerous roads.

According to police, the motorist involved in the hit-and-run accident drove to the Lang’ata police station and reported hitting a dog in the Kilimani area.

Officers from Lang’ata phoned their Kilimani counterparts, who confirmed that a middle-aged male had died in an accident, prompting them to detain the driver and automobile.

The vehicle was inspected and detained, but the driver was eventually freed on police cash bail pending further investigations.

The journalist’s body was transferred to the City Mortuary, where his colleagues and family came to establish his identity.

His acquaintances indicated he lived on Thika Road, which is where he is thought to have been heading.

Many people described Apollo as a hardworking journalist who was always ready to deliver.

Apollo’s death comes just weeks after another TV journalist, Nick Mudimba, collapsed and died on March 23 at his home in Syokimau following a brief illness.

Prior to Nick’s death, national broadcaster KBC lost another journalist, Fredrick Parsayo, who was discovered dead in his house in the Kinoo district on March 21.

Over 20 journalists have died in car accidents over the last five years, including veteran journalist Ken Walibora.
