Haiti Gangs Planning Hostile Takeover As Kenyan-Led MSS Troops Put On High Alert

Kenyan troops in Haiti have been placed on high alert after rumors surfaced that a coalition of criminal groups is trying to take control.

They also intend to compel a change in governance as the Caribbean nation prepares for elections to restore constitutional order.

The alarm comes as the United States, backed by President Donald Trump, reaffirms its support for Kenya’s Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti.

The US Department of State issued a statement on Sunday emphasizing its support for efforts to stabilize the Caribbean nation in the face of criminal gang threats.

“Following discussions between the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of State with Prime Minister of Barbados and Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Mia Mottley, the United States supports the statement by CARICOM condemning any actions to destabilize Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council,” a statement from the Department Spokesperson read in part.

“The United States supports the efforts by the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission and CARICOM to assist the government in its efforts to bring peace and stability to Haiti in the face of armed criminal gangs.  The United States continues to consult with governments across the region.”

The reports of criminal gangs plotting to grab power from the present transitional council were revealed in a statement made by Barbados’ Prime Minister, Mia Mottley, who also serves as the chairman of the CARRICOM.

CARICOM expressed concern that the attempted power grab, which is likely to disrupt Kenyan forces’ operations in the Caribbean island, could exacerbate Haiti’s already terrible humanitarian catastrophe.

“CARICOM strongly condemns any attempt to replace the transitional arrangements by force and violence,” read a statement from CARICOM.

“These arrangements were put in place by Haitian stakeholders to pave the way for free and fair elections by February 07, 2026, and to return Haiti to constitutional authority.”

CARICOM has urged its international allies to offer Haiti urgent additional security support, which may be a significant boost for the number of Kenyan officers stationed there.

“CARICOM urges the international community, including the United Nations and the Organisation of American States, to take all necessary steps to support the Haitian authorities as they address this crisis,” it added in the statement.

According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), 1,041,000 Haitians had been internally displaced as of mid-January, with many risking their lives to flee by any means necessary.

In the last month alone, approximately 60,000 people have been displaced, raising concerns that intensifying violence will imperil the most vulnerable.

Haiti is now organizing elections on February 7, 2026, to prepare the ground for elections and restore the country’s constitutional authority.
