Kirinyaga Man Charged For Threatening UDA MP Through WhatsApp
A man has been accused in Kirinyaga County’s Wang’uru Law Courts for sending threatening messages to Mary Maingi, the Mwea MP.
The man appeared in court on Monday, April 14, accused of violating the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act by sending a threatening message via the WhatsApp messaging program.
“On March 27, 2025, in an undisclosed place in Kenya, you knowingly used WhatsApp to send a threatening message from your phone number to the phone number of Mary Maingi, knowing that it would be harmful to the recipient,” the charges read.
The 34-year-old pleaded not guilty to the allegations and was granted a Ksh100,000 bond or Ksh30,000 cash bail.
The matter will be heard on April 28, and the hearing will be held on July 28.

This is not the first time a Kenyan has found themselves in a similar scenario, particularly since famous officials’ phone numbers have been exposed online.
During the Gen Z protests in June 2024, numerous lawmakers who supported Finance Bill 2024 had their phone numbers released online so that Kenyans might “send greetings” about their controversial stance.
Most notably, a university student was charged in November 2024 for posting fake information on President William Ruto on X, claiming that his body was being transferred.

The image showed a casket with a Kenyan flag being transported by military officers dressed in ceremonial uniforms, as is common at state burials.
“The offence is said to have been committed on November 13, 2024, at an unknown location within the Republic of Kenya,” the charges read.
The allegations would follow a string of forced disappearances of Kenyans, primarily X users who utilized AI to create frightening images of important leaders.
Cartoonist Kibet Bull’s silhouettes of the President and his associates acquired attention on social media, prompting his unusual disappearance and eventual return, the complete tale of which has yet to be revealed.
