Ex-Standard Group Staff Stage Protests Over Unpaid Dues

On Tuesday, hundreds of former Standard Group employees demonstrated along the busy Mombasa Road and marched to the company’s offices to protest the delayed payment of salary and benefits.

The dissatisfied ex-staff, including journalists, accused the Mombasa Road-based media business of failing to honour financial agreements, claiming they have yet to get outstanding amounts after years of service.

The media practitioners, armed with placards, insisted that, despite previous promises to settle the arrears, the administration of one of the oldest media groups had yet to follow through.

They also claimed that as the economy continues to deteriorate, it has become increasingly difficult for them to afford basic essentials.

They also accused the media outlet of failing to remit crucial deductions from employees’ pay stubs, such as savings and credit cooperative (SACCOS) subscriptions, pension payments, and taxes.

“We have come together to reveal human standing labour and rights violations committed by this company. The allegations highlight a systematic pattern of misconduct,” read a statement from the former employees.

“These include unpaid salaries, non-remittance of pension deductions, and unpaid redundancy dues,” it added.

“These have impacted the financial wellbeing of former employees and overall livelihoods including those of their dependents.”

Some of the former employees were laid off in July of last year after the company experienced financial difficulties as a result of declining media sales.

Others voluntarily exited the station and have yet to be compensated by the media house’s administration.

According to reports, during the most recent redundancy process, employees were pressured and deceived into signing and accepting a one-year payment plan that never materialised.

Former employees of the company staged demonstrations outside its headquarters in December over unpaid debts, calling on the government and labor organizations to intervene and assist in obtaining justice.

At the time of publishing this article, the management, under the leadership of Group Chief Executive Officer Marion Gathoga Mwangi, had yet to respond to the plight of the former staff.
