‘I Need Security!’ – Rigathi Gachagua Demands Protection, Claims His Life Is In Danger
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed concern over what he describes as a well-planned scheme to take his life.
In a comprehensive statement released Tuesday morning, April 15, the former Deputy President accused Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.
He accuses the state of purposefully removing his security team, leaving him exposed to attacks by organised criminal groups.
“Reference is made to the above subject matter for your immediate action and attention regarding my security, that of my family, my supporters and my property,” Gachagua stated in the letter.
“As you are aware, you have a constitutional responsibility and duty to protect the life and property of every Kenyan… However, in this case, Mr. Kanja, you are clearly perpetuating crime and violence.”

The former DP, who was impeached in October 2024, highlighted recent disruptions at events where he was present.
This includes a church service in Mwiki, where his private security was forced to fire rounds into the air to disperse a raucous crowd.
Gachagua added: “You are clearly perpetuating crime and violence,” he wrote. “Your silence is the loudest ever.”
In his statement, the former DP detailed several other incidents that he claimed proved his life was at risk.
The incidents varied from a teargas canister thrown at his Nyandarua ceremony on December 28 to an April 6 incident at PCEA Kasarani East Parish.
Gachagua then issued a series of demands to the Inspector General of Police, including the arrest and prosecution of ‘perpetrators of violence’.
He also wanted protection at any public engagements he attended, emphasizing that he was still the country’s leader.
Furthermore, Gachagua advised the state against ‘intervention with peaceful gatherings of individuals’.
He also urged personnel from the National Intelligence Service and other security organizations to cease pursuing him.
Finally, the former Deputy President asked for protection for his homes and possessions.
“Take note of your constitutional establishment under Article 245 of the Constitution of Kenya and more specifically 245(2)(b) on independent command of the National Police Service,” Gachagua further cautioned the IG.

Following the incident at the PCEA Mwiki church on April 7, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) released a statement explaining why Gachagua lacked state-issued protection.
According to the DCI, there was no prior contact about political leaders’ planned attendance at the religious services.
“The Mwiki police command has stated that the church failed to notify the police of the planned function, which included political leaders, and therefore, no advance security measures were deployed to handle such an eventuality,” the statement read in part.
