Gov’t Reveals How Algeria, Russia’s Donated Fertilizer Was Handled

Following public concerns, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura addressed how 33,835 metric tonnes of fertiliser raw materials donated by Russia to Kenya were used.

Mwaura told the press on Wednesday, April 16, that the government had received 40,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser raw materials from the Russian government.

He went on to say that the fertiliser raw materials were locally combined into almost 2 million bags of fertiliser, which were then supplied to farmers at reduced rates.

Mwaura added that the government subsidised each 50kg bag of fertiliser at Ksh2,500, resulting in a total savings of Ksh2 billion for farmers across the country.

Mwaura stated that these were created expressly to help critical crops like maize, tea, and rice through the National Fertilizer Subsidy Programme (NFSP).

“Clarification: What happened to the 33,835 metric tonnes of fertiliser raw materials donated by Russia to Kenya? Russia donated 33,835 metric tonnes of raw materials, which were locally blended into over 2 million bags of fertilisers for maize, tea and rice,” he stated.

“These donations were handed to some companies and then resold to the government at market rates, pocketing billions,” the government spokesperson added.

In addition to the Russian donation, Algeria provided 16,000 metric tons of urea, which was used to make 561,000 bags of top-dressing fertilizer.

Mwaura stated that the fertilizer donation from the North African country was combined with lime to promote soil health, saving farmers an additional Ksh729 million.

“The government subsidised each 50kg bag at Ksh 2,500, saving farmers Ksh 2 billion,” he explained.

“Algeria donated 16,000 metric tonnes of urea, producing 561,000 bags of top-dressing fertiliser blended with lime to improve soil health.”

This clarification comes in response to charges made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that the administration sold fertilizer donations intended for farmers.

According to Gachagua, Russian fertilizer was donated to Kenya, repackaged, and then sold to Kenyan farmers at exorbitant costs.
