HUMANITY! Lawyers Join Hands To Pay Debt For Housemaid Facing Jail Time
In a remarkable turn of events at the Milimani Courts, lawyers and a magistrate banded together to spare a housemaid from a jail sentence when they rallied to clear her debt on the spot.
The housemaid, who appeared virtually before Magistrate Justine Asiago with her infant in hand, was sued for failing to settle a debt.
The accused told the judge that she only made Ksh5,000 and couldn’t pay the Ksh20,000 loan.
In the verdict, the judge stated that if she did not pay the amount, he would have no alternative but to imprison her.
Advocate Omuga instantly intervened, offering to settle the bill for the defenseless woman and keep her out of jail.

His generosity triggered a chain reaction, with another lawyer contributing, then another, until Justice Asiago himself pitched in.
Within five minutes, the lawyers had received Ksh21,000, which exceeded the initial amount and paid the obligation, with the remaining going to the accused.
“I hear someone saying that in the spirit of Easter, let us bless her. We have exceeded the target, but if anyone still wants to contribute, the floor is open, let us bless this mother during this period,” Justice Asiago said.
What was supposed to be a heartbreaking verdict in which a mother was sentenced to prison became a time of optimism.

Strangers’ spontaneous acts of goodwill became a watershed moment, demonstrating that legal systems, which are typically viewed as cold and strict, can accommodate compassion.
The case was ended, but what remained was a one-of-a-kind, heartwarming exhibition of humanity within Kenya’s court system—a rare sight to see.
The more than 70 persons who attended the virtual meeting were treated to a rare, remarkable event that not only resolved a legal dispute but also restored faith in human kindness.
In Kenya, courts operate tightly within legal frameworks, with judgment debtors who fail to pay facing jail time or asset seizures, but this case has revealed a different side.
