The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has instructed a chicken processing plant in Naivasha to stop dumping untreated water waste into the environment or face the consequences.

NEMA issued a statement on Wednesday, April 23, stating that the facility has been releasing this trash without an Effluent Discharge Licence.

The facility was so ordered to suspend further garbage release and to implement measures to contain any solid waste created by the facility within seven days.

At the site, NEMA officers found poor solid waste manure management from the processing factory, as well as the lack of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or Environmental Audit (EA).

“During inspection, there were no records of Environmental Impact  Assessment (EIA) or Environmental Audit (EA) for the facility. There was also evidence of poor management of solid waste manure from the facility,” part of the statement read.

“They were ordered to stop further discharges and put in place measures to contain all solid waste generated by the facility within seven days.”

They were also encouraged to report the compliance to the NEMA Naivasha Sub-county office.

This notice came just a week after NEMA ordered the immediate closure of Habanos Lounge, a famous Northern Bypass bar, following persistent noise complaints from residents.

“NEMA yesterday issued a Closure Order to Habanos Lounge, located along Northern Bypass, following persistent noise complaints from neighbours and failure by the club to adhere to previous orders to control noise pollution. The orders are to take effect immediately,” read the statement.
