Gachagua Hosts Linturi, Meru Leaders In Wamunyoro

On April 24, former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi led a delegation of important political heavyweights from the Meru region to officially join former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s campaign.

The former CS was among several political heavyweights who met at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro estate for strategic talks as the political landscape in the Mt. Kenya region shifted.

This new delegation, one of the most significant from Mount Kenya East, may jeopardize Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s efforts to unite the area ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The action also underscores Gachagua’s growing regional authority, despite his dismissal and subsequent pushback from Kindiki and his Kenya Kwanza friends.

Kindiki recently received President William Ruto for a visit to the Mt. Kenya region, during which Ruto offered Linturi and former Meru Governor Peter Munya job opportunities.

On April 3, during his five-day trip to the vote-rich region, Ruto stated that he was in talks with both Munya and Linturi about joining an expanded, broad-based government.

“I am in talks with them. I already have a plan for them,” Ruto assured the public after Meru Governor Elias Muthuma appealed for the two leaders to be accommodated.

Mutuma emphasised their capability to serve the country and contribute to its growth.

In a stunning turn of events, Munya stated his intention to retake the Meru governor seat in 2027 rather than accept a government job.

Speaking on Wednesday, April 23, he dismissed any talk of joining the government, noting that his primary political priority is the Meru governorship.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I am focusing on running for the Meru governor seat in the upcoming elections,” he declared.

“I want to make it very clear that I am not looking for any other job; the only job I’m seeking is Governor of Meru.”

Munya stated that he has not received any job offers and if approached, would deny them.

“I don’t have the time or luxury to serve in any other position. I have not been offered any job by anyone, and even if I am, I will not accept it,” he reiterated.

While it is unknown if Munya would join with Gachagua or remain with Kenya Kwanza, the political landscape in the Mt. Kenya region is changing dramatically as the 2027 elections approach.

Gachagua has increased talks with political leaders from around the region, indicating a concerted effort to secure Mt. Kenya’s political fealty.
