Eliud Kipchoge Issues Statement After London Marathon’s 6th Finish

Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has broken his silence following a disappointing performance at the London Marathon on Sunday, April 27, where he finished sixth position.

Kipchoge expressed trademark grace and hope in a statement hours after finishing the marathon, implying that he will continue to race marathons despite being in his twilight years.

“In sport, as in life, not every attempt turns into victory, but each one brings meaning,” he said.

Despite failing to finish on the podium, Kipchoge, 40, who won the London marathon in 2019, said he was going feeling motivated, pleased, and hungry for the challenges ahead.

Kipchoge, widely recognized as one of the best marathon runners of all time, also thanked spectators for their encouragement along the way.

He also referred to the London Marathon and its enthusiastic supporters as having “the biggest place in my heart”.

“Thank you for all your cheers on the course,” he added. “This race and these fans have the biggest place in my heart.”

Despite Kipchoge’s disappointment at the London marathon, Sebastian Sawe, who has the fifth-fastest marathon time in history, won convincingly with a pace of 2:02:28 in his second 42-kilometer marathon.

Sawe, 29, finished in an astounding 2:02:26. Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda finished in second place with a time of 2:03:37, followed by Alexander Mutiso Munyao in third at 2:04:20.

Kipchoge’s sixth-place result was not only unusual, but it also hinted at the end of an era for the man regarded as the greatest marathon runner of all time.

The 40-year-old won a decent Ksh971,000 (USD 7,500), which was the prize money for sixth place.

This excludes a rumored appearance fee of approximately KSh19.4 million (USD150,000).

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said in a detailed statement on Tuesday, April 1, that it had upheld the 35-year-old’s first sentence following positive erythropoietin and furosemide tests.
