FKF Issues Statement On Shabana-Gor Mahia Chaos, Vow To Probe After 72 Fan Injuries

Gor Mahia and Shabana FC could face hefty punishments as a result of the chaos that erupted during their Kenya Premier League encounter at the Gusii Stadium on Sunday.

Prior to the match, there was a stampede at the stadium, which was packed to capacity with enthusiastic supporters, as passions over the so-called ‘Nyanza derby’ reached a fever pitch, causing some disruption.

The Football Kenya Federation has since issued a statement criticizing some sad incidents at the Gusii Stadium.

The body stated that investigations were underway to identify what caused the brawl.

According to a statement signed by FKF President Hussein Mohammed, at least 72 supporters were brought to the hospital due to injuries sustained during the event.

“FKF strongly condemns all forms of force in our stadiums. Football must remain a sport that brings people together, not one that puts lives at risk,” the statement read.

The safety and well-being of fans, players, and officials remain the Federation’s first priority.

There were clues that things could go wrong in the days leading up to the Sunday game, especially after the stadium filled up well before the start.

By 1 p.m., hundreds more supporters were left without seats as they continued to rush into the stadium, which had reached capacity.

Images and videos uploaded online depicted a worrisome picture, with fans visible in the stands engaging in physical combat.

It is, however, unclear whether the scuffle was between fans from the same teams or rival supporters.

At one point, the chaos descended onto the pitch moments before players emerged for the warm-up, with some fans spotted hurling projectiles towards the stands.

In their statement, the FKF confirmed investigations were underway amid a collaboration with police.

“We are working closely with the relevant authorities to establish the circumstances that led to the unrest. Decisive disciplinary action will be taken upon conclusion of ongoing investigations,” the Federation added.

If Gor Mahia or Shabana fans are found guilty of wrongdoing during the game, their respective clubs may face harsh consequences, including stadium bans.

Depending on the severity of the disciplinary issue, potential consequences might vary from fines to stadium bans or partial club closures, as well as legal action against anyone involved in the chaos.

According to the findings of the investigations, Gor Mahia and Shabana are likely to face travel bans, particularly for away matches, for one or both sides.
