‘Tighten Your Security!’ – Wetangula Warns MPs After Charles Were’s Assassination
On Tuesday, May 6, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula issued a warning to Members of Parliament following the tragic shooting of Kasipul legislator Charles Were.
Wetangula escorted a group of MPs to the Lee Funeral Home to see the body of their departed colleague, and then the leaders traveled to Were’s home in Karen to grieve the family.
While honoring the late Were as a decent guy, the National Assembly Speaker criticized social media accusations that he claimed were intended to cast the late MP in a negative light.
Regarding the shooting incident, the Speaker advised MPs to beef up their security, claiming that what happened to Were could happen to anyone.
This afternoon, accompanied by a delegation of Members of Parliament, I visited the home of the late Kasipul MP, Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, to condole with his family following his tragic and untimely death after being fatally shot last Wednesday by unknown assailants.

“I encourage members; what has happened to Ongondo Were can happen to anyone. So I urge you to tighten your security; don’t fear to live and don’t live in fear, but be careful,” Wetangula stated.
He added, “As Members of Parliament, very few people like you. For strange reasons, people who want to come into Parliament don’t like people in Parliament.”
Charles Were died on the evening of Wednesday, April 30, when a shooter opened fire on him while he was sitting in traffic on Ngong Road.
The MP died instantaneously, and an investigation revealed that some of the bullets had pierced his vital organs.
Investigations into his murder have resulted in the arrest and imprisonment of four individuals, with the DCI revealing that an active member of the police force was implicated.
Following their arraignment, the judge ordered that the four suspects be kept in various police stations in Nairobi pending the completion of investigations.

With Were’s funeral scheduled for Friday, May 9, Wetangula also warned Members of Parliament against politicizing the high-profile send-off in order to give the MP a proper send-off.
“As a parliament, we say pole sana, and on Friday, we will be at home so that we can be able to give our brother a decent send-off,” Wetangula said.

“I beg you, don’t make it a political rally. Let it be a funeral, and let us mourn our friend with the dignity he deserves.”
He added: “We will be coming as a family of parliament and I urge all Members of Parliament to join us.”
Prior to the burial, Wetangula informed the late MP’s kin that parliament will take up the financial logistics of the funeral, including burial arrangements and transportation.
Were’s body will be evacuated to Homa Bay County on Thursday, followed by burial in Kachien Village in his home constituency of Kasipul the following day.
