ODM Issues Procedure For Slain Kasipul MP Charles Were’s Burial

Edwin Sifuna, Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has stated that the late Kasipul Member of Parliament (MP) Charles Were will be buried in party colours.

While appearing on Citizen TV on Thursday, May 8, Sifuna stated that Were’s funeral will be marked by the party’s orange colors, as per the late lawmaker’s desires before his untimely death.

Sifuna revealed this information in an effort to explain why the ODM party will be prominent during the legislator’s funeral on Friday.

“Personally, I am very averse to coming to these funerals where people are dressed in party colours,” Sifuna stated.

“But you will forgive us on Friday (May 9) because it was Ong’ondo Were’s wish that he be buried in ODM colours.”

The ODM Secretary General went on to say that this should not be confused with the idea that politics will be the focus of the burial.

According to his wishes, he will be buried in an orange shirt signifying the ODM colours.

Furthermore, an ODM flag is scheduled to be put over his corpse, as was done for the late George Oduor, a loyal adviser to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Sifuna also stated that the funeral would be calm, despite allegations that there would be attempts to disrupt the service.

This comes as stories circulate that Homa Bay County has experienced increased tension as a result of MP Were’s untimely death.

“During the funeral service of MP Were on Wednesday (May 8), we gave assurances (as ODM) that for as long as we all respect the decorum, we expect to have a peaceful sendoff for the Honourable Ong’ondo Were,” Sifuna noted.

This is after lawyer Danstan Omari, representative of politician Philip Nahashon Aroko, alleged that the timing of his summons to appear before the police was a plan to make him fail to attend Were’s funeral.

Aroko was pinpointed as a wanted man in the investigations surrounding MP Were’s murder.

Aroko, an influential businessman, is thought to have significant political interests in Homa Bay, particularly the Kasipul seat, which is now empty following Were’s death.

However, Aroko denied any role in Were’s murder, citing his call to appear before the sleuths as a diversion related to local politics in Homa Bay.

On April 30, MP Were was fatally shot by an unknown individual riding a motorcycle.

According to a police report, the pillion passenger approached the lawmaker’s vehicle and fired shots at him before getting back on the motorcycle and speeding away.
