100 UDA Members Sent To Uganda As Ruto Seeks Party Dominance

The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has announced intentions to send 100 party members to Uganda for leadership training.

President William Ruto’s party announced the decision on Friday, citing talks between the UDA and Uganda’s National Resistance Movement (NRM), led by President Yoweri Museveni.

The UDA leaders plan to attend the workshop at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi, Jinja, Uganda.

“UDA Party Secretary General Sen. Hassan Omar and Uganda’s ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM) counterpart, Rt. Hon Richard Todwong, held talks this morning at the party headquarters, Hustler Plaza,” UDA said in a statement.

The statement added: “The two Secretary Generals discussed issues of mutual interest between the two political outfits, including training of a batch of 100 members of the UDA party at Uganda’s National Leadership Institute – Kyankwanzi in Jinja.”

The visit followed a four-day official visit to Kenya by senior NRM officials.

The team, led by NRM’s Director of External Affairs Maj (Rtd) Awich Pollar Awich and Col Okei Rukogota of Uganda’s National Leadership Institute Kyankwanzi, was welcomed in Nairobi by UDA National Treasurer Japheth Nyakundi.

UDA acknowledged the visit on Thursday, May 8, stating that the delegation arrived following Mr Omar’s request.

“The officials are part of a delegation expected in the country at the invitation of the UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar. They were received by National Treasurer Hon Japheth Nyakundi,” UDA said in a statement.

NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong will join the team later for discussions with UDA leaders.

The visit coincided with expanded partnerships between UDA and NRM.

A 19-member group led by Omar recently met with Uganda’s President Museveni and other ruling party officials.

During their visit, UDA officials toured NRM’s leadership Academy, which the UDA hierarchy has openly indicated interest in emulating in Kenya.
