Sakaja’s Nairobi County Evicts Woodley Tenants Over Unpaid Arrears

Residents of Woodley in Nairobi have been left feeling despondent when the county government began evicting renters for long-term unpaid arrears.

The affected residents are now blaming the county government for flagrant contempt of the law.

They claim the evictions occurred just hours after they obtained a court order to maintain the status quo.

Friday morning turned bleak for residents of Nairobi’s Woodley Estate when county officials arrived unannounced and began evictions despite a court injunction suspending the procedure.

Among those obviously shaken is Sam Gachago, who has lived in Woodley for almost 50 years.

The wrinkles on his face express the shock and dismay that many people feel.

He isn’t alone. Countless families in this seemingly peaceful suburb are suddenly facing an uncertain future, unsure where they will sleep tomorrow or how they will survive beyond today.

Among the confusion, Gachago, who also chairs the Woodley Development Initiative, revealed the source of their issue.

“This morning, some county employees were sent to my house. They were ejecting people in a blatant disregard of the law. Their computation on arrears is also skewed,” he stated.

Residents claim that the eviction was carried out without respect for their property or dignity.

“Those who came here were more of goons. They threw items outside without caring.”

During the process, they lost precious goods and suffered irreparable damage to their homes and belongings.

Nairobi County officials, on the other hand, argued that the evictions were legitimate and essential in order to recover past-due rent.

“We are simply following the law. Our intention is not malicious; we are just ensuring that tenants pay what they owe the county,” Lydia Mathia, CECM, Nairobi County, stated.

The county denied having received any court order blocking the evictions. The affected families have vowed to return to court to seek redress.
